Blog – Savannahs leading Pest and Bug Control Company; Preferred Pest Control Thu, 20 Jul 2017 01:09:05 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Blog – Savannahs leading Pest and Bug Control Company; Preferred Pest Control 32 32 Travel Time Thu, 20 Jul 2017 01:09:05 +0000 It’s time for vacation. It is very busy this time of year with everyone traveling and some of us will bring home the worst souvenir ever, the dreaded bedbug. One of the simplest things you can do to avoid this problem is to take a flashlight with you. Do an inspection in your hotel room (or wherever you are staying) before you even bring your personal items into the room. Check the mattresses and foundations well for bugs or rust colored spots. Look in the cracks and crevices of the headboard and bed frame. Ask about their bedbug protocol and what they do to prevent problems. Once you return home from your trip, immediately launder and dry your clothing. You can place your luggage in large black trash bags, tie them up and place them in the sun outside for a day. The heat in the bag should kill anything you may have brought back home with you. But the best weapon you have is just a good flashlight.

Flea Free Thu, 13 Jul 2017 21:24:32 +0000 With all the moisture and heat, it’s that time of year again – flea time. A problem most people will have at one time or another. Go on vacation for a couple of weeks, and you may come home to fleas, fleas, fleas. They can be stopped with the proper treatment and patience. After we treat, it can take 2 to 3 weeks to break the cycle. That’s where the patience comes in. Customers sometimes do not understand why it can take some time to eliminate the problem. “You just serviced my home. Why do I have fleas still?” The pesticide, along with an insect growth regulator only kills the egg, the larvae, and the adult fleas. It does not kill the pupae because it is in a protected cocoon that pesticides cannot penetrate. That is where the 2 to 3-week treatment time comes in. So be patient and Preferred Pest Control will get rid of your fleas.

Why Do I Have Bedbugs? Tue, 02 May 2017 15:50:28 +0000 Bedbug customers always ask us, “How did I get them?” I can’t always answer that one. Sometimes bedbugs can be picked up while traveling, or maybe a relative visited your home and left them behind. It could be that you brought something into your home containing bedbugs. They have been found in theaters, department stores, and even doctor’s offices. Preferred Pest Control’s bedbug treatment program is unrivaled in the pest control business. We do not have failures, and we do not accept failure as an option. The only problem is reinfestation – if you don’t know how you got the bedbugs, you cannot guarantee that you won’t bring them back into your home. We can’t control how you got bedbugs to start with, but with regular pest control service we may be able to keep it from happening again. Maybe you should be a Preferred customer.

Termites in Non-Typical Structures Mon, 17 Apr 2017 14:59:30 +0000 When evaluating a structure for termite control, age is an important factor. The type and quality of construction also must be part of the equation. Depending on age, building codes may not have been in place. When structures are repurposed, it is often necessary to alter and modify for modern conveniences such as plumbing, HVAC, and electricity (see my blog on spray foam insulation). I strongly recommend using skilled trade professionals for modifications and repairs, up to and including the termite treatment. Call today for a free on-site inspection – it doesn’t hurt to ask questions.

Where Have All The Swarmers Gone? Tue, 11 Apr 2017 20:25:03 +0000 Where have all the swarmers gone?

Termite swarms, which used to be a common springtime occurrence, are not found as often these days. In the last few years, they have gone unseen. No one knows for sure why – weather, termite treatments, or just the natural progression of things. Does the absence of swarmers mean that there are no more insects and no more structural damage? That is doubtful. Preferred Pest Control has the expertise to evaluate any structure, develop treatment options for the homeowner, and implement the best plan suited for you. Please call Preferred Pest Control today for a no-cost, no-obligation termite inspection.

Why Wait? Sat, 18 Mar 2017 12:52:11 +0000 Termites – why not prevent instead of dealing with the damage and expense they can cause? Most people’s homes are the largest investment in their lifetimes. Why wait until termites swarm or are found while doing home improvements. The damage may have already been done. Preferred Pest Control is on the leading edge of termite prevention and control. Please call us today for a no-cost evaluation. Preferred Pest Control can come up with a plan of action suited for each individual home owner. WHY WAIT???

What is a proper Termite inspection? Do you inspect inside and outside? What is the purpose of a Termite inspection? Tue, 28 Feb 2017 21:33:53 +0000 A proper Termite inspection is the epitome of the old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Our technicians are trained and experienced to look for any signs of concern that may indicate a bigger problem that is not visible, or a future problem because of conducive conditions. Below are examples of what our technicians are looking for, that cause concern.

Interior inspection signs of concern:
– Damaged wood.
– Bubbling paint on molding.
– Dirt on sheetrock, in trim, and around windows and/or doors.
– Termite wings inside and/or around windows.
– Signs of moisture.
– Any inappropriate moisture regardless of the source (plumbing, roof leak, etc).

Exterior inspection signs of concern:
– Water damage.
– Untreated wood that has contact with the soil.
– Shelter dirt tubes running up the foundation.
– Disturbances to the ground where the treatment was applied, such as:

  • Flood damage (recent Hurricane produced heavy amount of rain!).
  • Landscaping changes.
  • Remodeling activity.
  • Pet or wildlife digging around the foundation.

No two structures are the same. There are risk factors. As experienced professionals, we can help identify and mitigate these conditions with proper Termite inspections.

Termites & Storm Damage Wed, 22 Feb 2017 10:00:49 +0000 It is Termite season!!!  This is the time of year when property owners get a glimpse into the visible part of the reproductive cycle of Termites.  With this in mind, also consider the fact that this past year was active for storms.  What does this mean to you?  This may mean erosion around or even under your foundation.

If you are relying on a Termite barrier around your structure, consider this….

The barrier is embedded in the soil.  If the soil is disturbed in any way, so is the treatment zone itself.  For many months, Preferred Pest Control has been addressing and educating our customers on this matter.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  We do NOT charge our customers for this knowledge.  It is NOT about revenue increases for our company.  This is Preferred Pest Control simply doing what is right for our customers.

Happy Love Your Pet Day! Mon, 20 Feb 2017 17:42:39 +0000 Okay, I love dogs. I have loved all my dogs. The back yard contains many of my favorite companions.

Anyways, let me get to the subject at hand – your dog’s food dish. One day, while feeding my dog, Sissy, I noticed a bad odor. The area was clean, so I followed my nose to the source of the odor. To my surprise, it emanated from Sissy’s food dish. The dish appeared to be clean, but it was made of a material that was porous and it had absorbed food particles which had caused the bad odor. Then I thought about how much better my dog’s sense of smell is than my own. I quickly remedied the situation with a new bowl for Sissy.

Placement of food dishes is something to consider. Do not place them near your vehicle. If you provide food and harborage, then comes mice or rats, and then comes snakes to feed on the rodents.

Tips from the Better Business Bureau Thu, 21 Jan 2016 16:28:26 +0000 In the pest control industry, the key to success is always staying on top of the most recent trends and practices throughout the market.  Sometimes, in our endeavor to research this goal, we broaden our search to markets nationwide, focusing on those states which have similar climates (and therefore, pest problems) to our own.

In today’s blog, I wanted to share an article I found that was written by a member of the Better Business Bureau in Texas.  It covers very prudent information about pest prevention and choosing a pest services company that you could benefit greatly from.

In the article, the author is putting forth tips that may reduce your dependence on a pest service company.  So why might I, an individual who heads one of these aforementioned businesses, be broadcasting it to you?  I share this information because our business operates differently than most other pest control companies.

I entered this industry in 1988 with one goal in mind: to wake up every day knowing that fewer people had pests invading their homes than the day before.  Sometimes, a pest services company needs only to give you the tips presented in the article.  Store your food in closed containers, keep your home de-cluttered and clean, and do your research.  There are many situations when, for whatever reason, prevention did not keep away all the pests in your home.  In cases like these, direct pest treatment may be necessary.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

In the second half of her article, Heather Massey explains the research you should conduct regarding all of the pest services companies in your particular market, as well as the steps you should take when making your agreement with the company you select.  In addition to these recommendations, the BBB itself grades businesses based on a number of factors like customer service, value, and professionalism.  We are proud that Preferred Pest Control received and has maintained an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

If you are looking for a pest services company that looks out for you without taking your money into consideration, you have found the one!
